I am thinking about buying a Kubota with a front loader but am not sure which one to get, either the BX1500 or 1830. The 1500 is cheaper, but only has 15 hp. Does anyone have one of these? Is 15 hp enough power, especially for using the front loader?

Go with the 2230. It is only a couple hunded dollars more than the 1830. I had the same debate when I was shopping. Yes the 1500 (1530?) is much less expensive but with only about 12 PTO HP it can become limited in it's applications. My 2230 has never lacked the power I need for the FEL, deck or snow-thrower. ....

We just built a house and have a 3 acre yard. Currently it is part field grass and part bare ground. The 'final grade' that the builder did wasn't much of a final grade so we need to smooth it out. We are thinking about borrowing a box scraper to do some of it, but would like to use the front loader to work on it as well. Eventually we will mostly be using it to mow the 3 acres. ....

One more thing.. the price we got for the 1500 with FEL is $9900 and the price for the 1830 w/ 60" mow deck and FEL is $12149. ....

One more comment, the smoothness of the 3 cyllinder motors (18 and 22 hp) were also factors in my decision. I didn't like the vibration of the 15 hp twin. ....

If you are going to be doing grading work, I would go with the 2230. That extra horsepower makes grading work so much easier. A box blade needs some soil build up in the box for it to work well. The 2230 will do a much better job handling the box. ....

I will defend the BX1500. I think it would be fine for your use, especially for the $$$ savings. The extra engine HP of the 1830/2230 will allow you to run marginally larger implements, but rememeber, the 1830/2230 are still sub-CUTs. They are nearly the same physical size. I have never run out of power with my 1500. The benefits of an 1830/2230 are: more PTO HP (implement size is still limited), cruise control (limited usefulness for residential duty), larger fuel tank (higher fuel consumption from the 3 cyl). The wheelbase of the 1830/2230 is longer, but the hydraulic flow and lift capacity at the 3-point is the same as the 1500. The three point will easily lift the front of the tractor off the ground at idle. I will concede the smoother 3 cyl engine... at idle. The 2-banger practically wants to jump off the frame at idle, but is silky smooth from 1/4 throttle on up. ....

Keep the money in your pocket! The BX1500 with less horsepower then the other tractors still weighs about the same so the amount that they pull all comes in about the same. The three cylinder is smoother at an idle but when you are running it in the operating range I don't think you could tell the difference. ....
